Founded by Emma Goodier, Leo's Golden Words raises awareness of Childhood Apraxia of Speech and supports families who are fighting for answers, diagnosis and therapy.
Information board
Childhood Apraxia of Speech, sometimes called developmental verbal dyspraxia, is a motor speech disorder. A child knows what they want to say, but their brain has difficulty planning and coordinating the precise movements needed for clear speech.
CAS is not caused by laziness or lack of understanding. Children often need specialist, consistent speech and language therapy, plus joined-up support from health, education and family networks.
Apraxia can affect clarity, sequencing of sounds, word attempts and confidence. Some children may understand far more than they can say.
Some children may also have wider coordination challenges, including fine motor skills, gross motor skills, balance, dressing, writing or sports.
Communication difficulties can affect friendships, learning, behaviour and family life. Early recognition and the right support can make a meaningful difference.
This page shares general information only and is not a diagnosis. Families should seek advice from a qualified Speech and Language Therapist, GP, paediatrician or NHS service.
Leo's Golden Words was founded by Emma Goodier, mum to Leo. Leo is five years old and lives with apraxia.
Emma knows how lonely and exhausting the journey can be. She struggled to get a diagnosis and to access the support Leo needed through local health organisations and authorities. Like many families, she had to fund private therapy to make sure her child could receive the help he deserved.
Emma created Leo's Golden Words to raise awareness, help parents feel less alone and campaign for children to be heard sooner.
“Every child deserves to be understood, supported and given the chance to find their voice.”
